Hideaway Hogs is a small family run business. We are situated in the picturesque village of Ludchurch on the Pembrokeshire coastline.
We are breeders of pedigree welsh pigs and pedigree hampshire pigs, we supply quality welsh pork to local butchers and send 1/2 pig packs to private customers both in the UK and in France. Our pork was showcased in the 2011 Narberth Food Festival
The modern welsh pig is white(ours, sadly, are more of a muddy pink) , with lop ears meeting at the tips. It has a long level body with deep hams, it can be fast growing, with back fat to produce moist, succulent pork and wonderful crackling. Pedigree welsh pork is fully traceable from birth so you can be confident about the meat on your plate. They make excellent mothers, have fantastic personalities and are easy to handle.
We have recently introduced the Hampshire breed to our herd.Imported from Hampshire to the US in 1832, they were used almost exclusively in the United States as a terminal sire, selected for their lean meat and used on other breeds, they were then exported into Britain in 1968. They look very much like a traditional saddleback but are indeed a modern breed, although it can be regarded as a 'British Native' because it originated in in the UK. They have prick ears, a muscular rump and strong shoulders. Sadly there are few breeders of the Hampshire in britain, we have recently had a litter of 13 and also have a young boar, so in time we are hoping to improve the popularity of this excellent meat pig, certainly they rival the pietrain in muscular good looks and their meat has a marbling of fat that melts in the mouth. We will in time cross a hampshire with a welsh, our intention is to be able to supply quality pork to suit all tastes.
Information regarding the Welsh and Hampshire bloodlines can be obtained from The British Pig Association website and also The Pedigree Welsh Pig Society. We are full members of both societies.
Our sows and gilts are free to roam in our 6 acre wood, being brought in to farrow, or spend quality time with our resident Casanova Hideaway Arthur, they then run loose in large, straw bedded pens and the sows farrow freely. The piglets stay with their mother for between 8-10 weeks. At weaning the mother is always taken away from the piglets, never the other way round, the piglets remain stress free and continue to eat and thrive in familiar surroundings and mum enjoys a well deserved rest. We don't mix the family groups to avoid fighting and injury. Prior to sale the piglets are wormed and tattooed and the pedigrees are all birth notified.
We also breed cross bred pigs to sell as weaners, for customers to grow on for the freezer and usually have a selection of gilts and boars available, they are kept in the traditional way, living outside with straw bedded pig arcs. We supply pigs for hog roasts, Narberth Rugby Club is a regular customer.
We cannot offer:- Hundreds of years experience, pictures of lush green fields full of brand new pig arcs, pigs that don't root, babies nestling with piglets in the sunshine (we did try this one but couldn't persuade anyone to lend us a baby!), immaculate, curly tailed, pink pigs ready for the show ring or a scantily clad wench bathing a boar (my wench days are well gone and the boar said no!).
What we can offer is a nice drive to our farm via the coast road, a decent cup of tea and a piece of fruit cake, well cared for, happy, relaxed, quality stock, suitable for both the novice or more experienced owner, we offer as much advice as we can, provide an excellent after sales service including food and information sheets, will answer the phone until 10pm and do our best to solve any problems that may arise. Our priority is the health and welfare of our pigs, so pressure selling is not a policy.
We encourage customers to visit our yard several times before making a purchase, to spend time with, enjoy and handle the pigs, the way they would at home.
Our stock boar is Hideaway Arthur, he is 12 months old, good natured, has a wonderful way with the ladies and also happens to very good looking! We have some excellent young Daffodil gilts growing on, one of whom won first prize at Pembrokeshire County Show in the best gilt 2011 class, beating a quality pietrain into second place, she has good length combined with deep hams and will be shown next year as an in pig gilt.
Visitors are welcome to make an appointment to view our pigs
